Officials investigate fatal work accident

Many areas of the country -- including North Carolina -- have experience with the complications that snow and ice during winter can cause. As a result, businesses and the government work hard to ensure that roads and parking lots are clear. Unfortunately, it appears that a man in a neighboring state died in a work accident while trying to do so.

The incident happened in early January and involved a 75-year-old man. While police have declined to provide details about how the accident happened, reports indicate that they discovered a man suffering from life-threatening injuries when they arrived on the scene. Reports indicate that the man had been operating a front end loader while clearing a parking lot, and some sort of contact between the man and the machinery occurred, causing his injuries.

Although the man was transported to the hospital, he ultimately passed away as a result of the injuries he suffered in the incident. Police have determined that the incident was not criminal in nature. The Virginia Department of Labor is set to investigate the incident.

The unexpected loss of a life is never an easy event. Unfortunately, the loss of wages and the additional cost of a funeral are often more than many families can manage. As a result, North Carolina requires employers to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage to help employees in the event of a work accident. If the accident results in a fatality, these benefits can extend to certain family members. An attorney with experience with these benefits can help grieving loved ones seek the compensation they deserve.
