What benefits are available from North Carolina workers' compensation?

A serious work injury can result in significant medical bills and lost wages while you are recovering. This is the reason we have workers' compensation in North Carolina, to provide medical and other benefits to injured workers.

If you or a family member has suffered a work-related injury in North Carolina, now is a good time to become familiar with the benefits available from our state's workers' compensation program. They include:

  • Free medical treatment, including prescription drugs, with no deductibles or co-payments. The insurance company has the right to choose your doctor, but you can request an independent medical evaluation if you are not satisfied with the care you are receiving.
  • Weekly benefits equal to two-thirds of your average weekly wage for up to 500 weeks from the date of injury.
  • Reimbursement for travel mileage (currently 54 cents per mile) for medical treatment.
  • If you suffer a permanent impairment, you are entitled to a settlement based on your disability rating.
  • If you have physical limitations that prevent you from returning to your regular job, you may qualify for retraining in the career of your choice or returning to 75 percent of your pre-injury earnings.

Workers compensation benefits are designed to give you the financial and medical support you need to get back on your feet after a work injury. Unfortunately, the longer you are out of work, the more likely it is that your employer and the insurance company will view you as an expense that needs to be controlled.

If the workers' compensation insurance company stops your benefits before you are able to return to work, or if you disagree with the medical treatment you are receiving, seek prompt advice from an experienced workers' compensation attorney.
