Worker killed in North Carolina construction accident

Reports say that a man was killed in an accident on a construction site in Wilkes Count on Tuesday, Aug. 26. The victim, a 38-year-old man who lived in Elon, died after being struck by a milling machine operated by another worker.

The incident occurred at 10:30 a.m. as construction crews were working to repave a parking lot near Pine View Baptist Church. According to statements made by a witness, the individual operating the milling machine was backing the vehicle up to make another pass when a retaining wall made of cinder blocks near the basement collapsed. This pushed the milling machine over, pinning its operator and striking the Elon man who had been directing the vehicle's operator prior to the collapse. County EMS and a number of fire departments worked for several hours to remove the milling machine from the scene.

According to the county medical examiner, the 38-year-old was killed instantly. However, the other man reportedly suffered only bruises in the incident. The deceased is survived by his wife and family who had already been notified about the death at the time one report was released.

The families of individuals who are killed in a workplace accident may face a number of financial difficulties after the accidents. For example, in addition to the loss of financial support, they might be required to pay for final expenses and medical costs that might have been incurred prior to the victim's death. However, some of these damages might be covered by workers' compensation insurance. Through a claim filed with the help of an attorney, the family of a deceased victim might be awarded benefits that may reimburse them for those costs.
