Are these professions worth the risk for North Carolina workers?

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2012, 3.2 fatal workplace injuries happened for every 100,000 people in the population. In total, 4,628 workers were fatally injured on the job, which is consistent with the yearly average of 4,500 to 6,500 fatal injuries each year. With that in mind, let's take a look at five risky professions to see how they compare to these numbers.

On average, fishermen have 117 fatal injuries per 100,000 people. This much higher than average, and a fisherman can expect to be paid $36,840 a year. For pilots, the fatal injury rate is an average of 53.7 fatal injuries per 100,000 , and airline pilots can expect to make an average salary of $129,600.

Construction workers and farmers also see a higher than average rate of fatal injuries with construction workers averaging 17.4 per 100,000 and farmers reporting 21.3 per 100,000. Workers in the construction field make roughly $35,000 on average while farm workers make about $73,000 a year. Finally, those who work in the trucking industry can expect 22.1 fatal injuries per 100,000 and make a salary of up to $40,940.

Those who are injured on the job may be able to file for workers compensation for lost wages and medical bills. Talking to an attorney can help those who think that they have a claim that they would like to pursue. An attorney can review the facts in a given case and may also be able to gather more facts to help an injured worker receive everything that he or she is entitled to under the law.
