Man's arm forcefully amputated in construction accident

Most people in North Carolina are aware that all jobs hold some degree of risk. The degree of risk varies, however, according to the type of occupation and the equipment needed to complete job-related tasks. For example, construction workers could face additional risks as they use the heavy machinery. In fact, a recent construction accident in another state has left a man facing a serious injury.

The incident happened on a day in late November. Rescue workers were called to the scene at approximately 10 a.m. According to witnesses, the 44-year-old man was using a tool to bore holes in the ground -- an industrial auger -- at the time of the accident.

His right arm reportedly became trapped in the drill bit. The force resulted in the amputation of his arm just below his shoulder. Reports indicate that the man was conscious and talking afterward, reportedly thanks to the first aid provided by a police officer on the scene. The victim was taken to one hospital for assessment before he was flown to another one to reattach the arm.

Injuries such as this can have lifelong effects. In addition to the strain that medical bills can place on victims of a construction accident, some are unable to work for a significant period of time, resulting in lost wages. In some cases, victims are never able to return to work in the same capacity. Although employers in North Carolina and across the country are required to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage, many injured workers are unsure of the process. Fortunately, an experienced professional can help guide them through the process and seek the benefits they deserve.
