Police officer dies as a result of workplace injuries

Most people dread seeing the flashing lights of a police officer in their rearview mirrors. Despite this, many people in North Carolina recognize that most police officers enforce traffic laws to ensure everyone's safety and often put their own lives at risk while doing so. Unfortunately, a police officer in another state recently lost his life due to workplace injuries suffered while conducting what likely began as a routine traffic stop.

The incident happened on a day in August. According to reports, the officer pulled over a sports utility vehicle. Both the officer, who was riding a motorcycle, and the driver of the SUV were on the right shoulder of the roadway.

Representatives with the California Highway Patrol claim that the driver of a pickup truck inexplicably veered out of the lanes of traffic, onto the shoulder, striking the officer and the parked SUV. The officer passed away after being transported to the hospital. Reports also indicate that another one of the drivers involved was killed as a result of the accident.

Unfortunately, an officer who was simply trying to perform his job-related tasks has now passed away as a result of workplace injuries, leaving behind his wife and children. While the dangers of such an occupation are known, no family is ever emotionally prepared for the news that their loved one died as a result of what was likely a preventable incident. While grieving families in North Carolina must come to terms with the grief associated with such a loss, they are sometimes left coping with serious financial ramifications as well. As a result, states require that employers provide workers' compensation insurance coverage, which can help in the aftermath of an unexpected loss. An experienced professional can help these families fully understand the benefits to which they may be entitled.
