3 injured in work accident; 2 remain hospitalized

Under regular circumstances, most employees in North Carolina likely know how to protect their safety. However, when unusual, difficult-to-anticipate scenarios arise, accidents can happen. Unfortunately, three people were recently injured in a work accident that happened in a neighboring state.

The incident happened at approximately 7:30 p.m. on a day in mid-June at an Army ammunition plant. The plant is run by BAE Systems. The facility reportedly produces propellant for the military.

Unfortunately, a fire broke out in a drying facility; in this area, surface moisture is removed from propellant. Nitrocellulose that is present during the drying process combusted, causing a flash fire. Three workers were taken to a local hospital before being transported to a North Carolina hospital with a burn facility. Though one of the men has since been released, two remain hospitalized, listed in critical condition. Officials say that an investigation is underway to help determine the cause of the fire.

The victims of this work accident may have a long road to recovery ahead of them. Even once their wounds have been treated, they may never be able to return to work in the same capacity. Between medical costs and lost wages, they could face an uncertain financial situation; however, North Carolina and other states require employers to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage. These benefits can prevent injured workers from facing financial ruin as a result of medical bills and lost wages. A professional with experience with the process can help victims negotiate with the insurance company and pursue the maximum amounts recoverable.
