OSHA investigates fatal North Carolina work accident

Even the safest workers can be injured while on the job. As a result, employers are required to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage. A family in North Carolina may be entitled to these benefits after a recent fatal work accident.

The incident that led to the 57-year-old man's death happened one afternoon on a day in mid-December. Reports indicate that the man was at a construction site. He is said to have been attempting to remove a jack from under a dump truck owned by McMillian Construction.

While the victim had been driving the dump truck, officials say that the vehicle was struck by a front-end loader. The impact of the collision caused the dump truck to roll forward, causing its wheels to roll over the victim. Officials with the North Carolina Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Division are currently investigating the incident to determine whether any health or safety violations occurred in the events leading up to the man's death. One officials claim that the investigation involves interviewing witnesses and processing evidence and could take several months to complete.

Even when workplace standards are carefully followed, a work accident can occur, often leaving victims -- including surviving family members in the event of a fatality -- wondering how they will fulfill their financial obligations. While workers' compensation insurance benefits can help with lost wages and funeral expenses, many people in North Carolina have had to fight for fair compensation. Fortunately, there are professionals with experience with the process who can help negotiate with insurance companies.
