OSHA investigates following workplace accident

While all jobs hold some degree of risk, many -- such as those involving the use of heavy machinery -- can have an increased risk of injury. Both workers and employers in North Carolina and across the country often go to great lengths to protect employees, but a workplace accident can still occur. Unfortunately, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is currently investigating a recent incident in another state that left a female employee with serious injuries.

The incident happened at approximately 11 a.m. on a day in mid-November. According to reports, she was operating a machine press at a manufacturing facility when both of her hands became entangled in the machinery. While a medical helicopter was called, it was unable to fly due to the weather.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Tennessee division of the federal safety agency. According to TOSHA, the investigation will involve interviewing witnesses in addition to reviewing company procedures and records and surveying the scene. The report will be made available to the public once completed, in approximately six to eight weeks.

Any injuries requiring treatment at the hospital can quickly result in overwhelming hospital bills. In addition to medical bills, the victim of the workplace accident may be concerned about her financial security due to lost wages. While she is likely entitled to workers' compensation benefits, she may be in no condition to negotiate with an insurance company or have the necessary experience to estimate the ongoing costs of her injuries. As a result, many people in North Carolina who qualify for such benefits ask an attorney with experience with the compensation process to help them seek a fair settlement.
