Work accident results in death of tow truck driver

Each workplace in North Carolina has its own unique safety risks. Some jobs require workers to travel to different locations, causing them to face hazards on the roadways. Unfortunately, tow truck drivers must face the potential of a work accident as they assist disabled motorists.

An out-of-state tow truck driver recently lost his life while helping a motorist in the early morning hours of a day in March. According to reports, the 34-year-old man responded to reports of a disabled pickup truck on an interstate. He reportedly parked his tow truck in front of the pickup.

Reports indicate that while he was standing near the driver side of the tow truck, a third vehicle side-swiped both stopped vehicles and struck the tow truck driver. The worker died at the scene of the accident. The driver who is believed to have struck him now faces multiple charges, including first-degree vehicular negligent injuring, vehicular homicide and suspended license. Another vehicle was ultimately involved in the accident, and both the driver of that vehicle and the accused individual suffered injuries that required hospitalization.

While police and prosecutors are pursuing justice for the deceased man, his family must soon come to terms with the financial ramifications of his loss. Many families in North Carolina who lose a loved one unexpectedly have difficulty coping with funeral expenses and loss of wages. Fortunately, all states require employers to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage; these benefits can provide for medical costs, funeral expenses and lost wages. If the work accident resulted in a fatality, the benefits can extend to certain family members. Because the compensation process is an added stress during an already difficult time, many seek help from an attorney who has experience with such benefits.
