Study: Workers with sleep apnea at higher risk of injury

Readers of this blog should know that getting a good night's sleep can be crucial to our health. Unfortunately, there are some people for whom this proves to be a considerable challenge. For example, if you suffer from sleep apnea, you are likely not getting the rest you need.

Not only could this affect your overall health, it could also affect your safety at work. According to a recent study, sufferers of sleep apnea are twice as likely as other workers to get injured on the job.

Sleep apnea is a condition that results in frequent disruptions in a person's sleep due to breathing complications. For instance, a person's airway might collapse resulting in snoring, gasping for air and coughing. Whether the person realizes it or not, he or she can be woken up several times a night because of these breathing problems.

When people are fatigued or drowsy, their decision-making skills can be impaired, as can their reflexes. For a person who works with heavy machinery, this can prove to be quite dangerous. Even workers in low-risk occupations can face an increased risk of accident because of sleep apnea. In fact, they are three times more likely to be injured in accidents like tripping and falling.

These findings may certainly be of interest to the more than 22 million Americans who are believed to suffer from sleep apnea. However, many people with this condition are undiagnosed, meaning they are at a higher risk of a workplace accident without even realizing it.

Getting injured on the job can result in some serious issues for workers. Not only can you suffer from the physical pain that accompanies an injury, but you can also be dealing with multiple hospital visits, having to take time off work and finding ways to care of yourself while you are recovering. In order to help you and your family cope with these challenges and get the help you need, it can be crucial that you discuss your options for workers' compensation with your attorney.
