Who is required to carry workers' compensation insurance?

Workers compensation insurance is designed to protect injured workers and workers otherwise harmed on the job, as well as their families. The North Carolina Workers' Compensation Act requires employers with three or more employees to carry workers' compensation insurance or qualify as a self-insured employer. The requirement includes corporations, sole proprietorships, limited liability companies and partnerships. Employers have the option to either obtain workers' compensation insurance or qualify as a self-insured employer.
