Injured truck driver awarded $2.2M

Employers have a legal and moral obligation to ensure for the safety of their employees. Employers who fail to take necessary measures to provide a safe working environment or force employees to work in unsafe or hazardous conditions run the risk of employees being involved in workplace accidents. Such accidents often result in employees sustaining injuries which require immediate and ongoing medical attention.

A truck driver was recently awarded $2.2 million for injuries he sustained while working. Under pressure from his employer, the man was responsible for both delivering and unloading boxes at a local retailer on the busiest shopping day of the year, also known as Black Friday.

The man's employer threatened to dismiss the truck driver if he failed to unload the boxes by morning. While unloading the boxes in the dark, the man was struck in the head by a box that was not properly loaded onto his truck. The 38-pound box fell on the man's head, knocking him unconscious. When the man awoke he realized he'd suffered painful injuries to his head, neck and back.

Under workers' compensation, the man filed a lawsuit against his employer related to the injuries he sustained while under the company's employment. After hearing testimony from both sides, a jury sided with the injured man and awarded him a settlement sum in excess of $2.2 million related to the painful and permanent injuries he sustained.

Employees who sustain injuries while working would be wise to consult with an attorney. A workers' compensation attorney works to protect the rights of clients and ensure injured workers receive just compensation related to their injuries, pain and suffering and financial burdens.
