Man killed in North Carolina industrial accident

Most employers and employees are aware of the many hazards in a workplace. Unfortunately, some hazards are often unexpected, making it difficult for workers to take precautions to avoid them. For example, one man was recently killed in an industrial accident in North Carolina.

The incident happened at approximately 10:30 a.m. on a day in early May. Details about the incident -- including the identity of the victim -- are unclear. However, reports indicate that a 34-year-old man became trapped between a trailer and a lift gate.

Emergency responders were called to the scene. Unfortunately, they were reportedly unable to revive the worker, and he passed away, presumably as a result of crush injuries. The incident, which occurred at a Coca-Cola bottling facility, remains under investigation by the North Carolina Occupational Safety & Health Division.

If the investigation reveals that the North Carolina industrial accident was the result of a failure to meet safety and health standards, the company could be cited and forced to pay a fine. While the goal of such sanctions is to encourage companies to take measures to prevent future incidents, they will do little to help the man's grieving family. Fortunately, surviving family members may qualify for workers' compensation insurance benefits that will help them cover the financial ramifications of their loss, including funeral expenses and lost wages. A professional with experience with such benefits can help these family members understand their rights and help them negotiate a fair settlement, including any appeal necessary after an initial denial of benefits.
