Fatal workplace accident remains under investigation

The unexpected death of a loved one is never an easy event for surviving family members in North Carolina. In addition to coping with their grief, they must also cope with the financial ramifications of their loss. One out-of-state family is likely still coming to terms with the news that their loved one was a victim of a fatal workplace accident.

The incident happened on a day in mid-March. According to a representative from the sheriff's department, the victim was a 43-year-old oil well worker. He was reportedly working on a well when something fell. The falling object caused the snatch block -- part of the well that is used to pull a pipe up and down on a well -- to fall and land on the man. He was pinned underneath the piece of equipment said to weigh between 2,500 to 3,000 pounds.

Unfortunately, the accident resulted in the man's immediate death. While the incident remains under investigation, officials do not believe that foul play was a factor in the fatal accident. Workplace accidents involving fatalities typically trigger investigations by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in addition to one completed by local officials.

While understanding how a fatal workplace accident happened may help some families find closure following an unexpected loss, many families struggle financially as a result of funeral expenses and lost wages. Fortunately, North Carolina requires employers to provide workers' compensation insurance coverage for employees in the event of a workplace accident. These benefits typically extend to certain family members if the accident is fatal. Because dealing with an insurance company is the last thing grieving families want to do, many ask an experienced attorney to negotiate on their behalf.
