Every work accident could soon be publicized in North Carolina

Employees are more likely to feel comfortable in their jobs and will make the greatest effort when they know that their employers are watching out for their best interests. A new law that is being proposed would require large companies to make their worker illness and injury records public. Businesses involved would include those with more than 250 workers. Companies would have to file electronic reports that the public, as well as researchers and officials, could access.

The ultimate goal of the legislation is to motivate more companies to adhere to safety regulations. This is particularly critical because OSHA is lacking in manpower to inspect all companies, and the administration's fees on companies who violate safety laws are minimal. Many employers, however, think that making these statistics widely available can cause people to misjudge how safe a company really is.

Sometimes, workplace illnesses or injuries occur, and no matter whose fault it is, businesses are required to buy insurance that covers these situations. Workers' compensation helps an injured or ill employee to cover associated medical costs or lost wages.
