North Carolina work accident leaves one dead

A North Carolina community has been shocked and saddened by the death of a construction worker outside a West McDowell school. The incident, which occurred during school hours, was fortunately not witnessed by any of the students. However, fellow construction workers have expressed their horror at the work accident that took the life of one of their own.

The victim, a 47-year-old worker who had been cleaning the road of debris, was suddenly hit by a construction vehicle. The vehicle, a truck that had been hauling dirt, struck the victim just before noon. The truck's driver, a 39-year-old co-worker of the victim, did not see the victim as he backed his truck down the hill. The victim was trapped under the back of the truck.

The injuries the victim sustained proved fatal, and emergency medical technicians pronounced him dead when he arrived at the hospital. While no students were at the scene, one of the victim's children reportedly attends the junior high school nearby. In response to this tragedy, the school has made arrangements for grief counselors to be on hand for students and teachers.

As with any North Carolina work accident, this one is being investigated thoroughly. The man's family is entitled to benefits under our state's workers' compensation insurance program, and may also be able to file a wrongful death claim as well. Whether or not the driver of the truck will be charged at some later date is unclear. This is the second work accident, albeit the only fatal one, the construction company has seen since their roadway project began.
